Structural Engineering, when performed correctly, enhances the form that the architect has devised.
Michael C. Head, PE created HEAD of Engineering to assist the legal, governmental, developer, design and construction communities in understanding and determining whether designs meet code minimums and the standard practice in the industry and, on occasion, perform forensic investigations into causes of failure of a facility to perform as was intended. Consequently, HEAD of Engineering, LLC gives an experienced option when problems arise on a project or in determining the cause when a building or building component has failed or otherwise caused an injury. Mr. Head has more than 40 years of structural engineering analysis, design and project/construction management experience throughout the United States and Saudi Arabia ranging from the design of new facilities, strengthening, renovation, retrofitting and repair of existing structures in the GMP, Design/Bid and Design/Bid/Build delivery methods and conducting forensic investigations as an expert witness. Up until 2016, he has been primarily engaged in the design and construction of building structures. During that time he has seen the good and the bad, what works and what doesn't and seen the design and the construction processes change dramatically. Since 2016 he has been working independently, primarily as an expert witness where his investigation, design and construction experience make him highly qualified to engage in forensic investigations and address a court as an expert witness. He is available to assist the design, construction, developer, real estate and legal communities in analyzing problems and determining how to address and solve them. Mr. Head was formerly Senior Structural Engineer in the Atlanta office of Heery International, a full service architectural, engineering, project management and construction management company with offices throughout the USA. Prior to this, at TLC Engineering for Architecture, a multi-disciplinary firm (MEPS) in 12 offices in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas and Tennessee he was a Principal/Partner and Senior Structural Engineer where he served as Chairman of TLC’s Structural Committee. He was responsible for the day-to-day development of projects from proposal to preliminary design through preparation of contract documents through construction to project completion and assistance to legal teams as an expert witness. His contributions include client liaison, managing the design team, engineering design, coordination of drafting, specification preparation, coordination with contractors and other disciplines, scheduling, shop drawing review and resolution of construction related issues on a wide range of projects that can be reviewed by clicking here His work experience at Stanley D. Lindsey and Associates Ltd, Brittingham and Associates, O'Kon and Company, Omrania (UK), Ltd and Ove Arup and Partners (now ARUP) also included many prestigious and complicated projects and forensic investigations. He is a registered professional engineer in 8 states, a registered Florida Special Inspector, a LEED Accredited Professional and a Post-Disaster Safety Assessor. His diverse portfolio includes aircraft hangars, airline terminals, apartment complexes, arenas, central utility plants, churches, concert halls, convention centers, educational facilities, medical facilities, gymnasiums, hotels, laboratories, manufacturing plants, low and high-rise office buildings, parking decks, performing arts centers and radiation treatment plants and multiple forensic investigations. His clients have included military and government agencies, universities and school boards, private developers, international airports and air carriers, banks, media corporations, hospitals and hotel chains, attorneys, developers, property owners and insurance companies.
